Under heavy usage, the lower end of these actuators is worn away. To remove the actuators for inspection, carefully rotate the paper pickup feed wheels while pulling upward on the L-shaped actuator (compare the 2 actuators, or compare them with actuators from a comparable machine that is in working order). Many HP and Panasonic inkjet models are comparable and parts can be ordered from Matsushita. If there is an encoder strip (scale) in inkjet models, clean it to correct a wide variety of problems (HP 900, OfficeJet, Panafax UF321). The encoder strip resembles a narrow piece of cellophane tape, and can be found behind and above the silver bar on which the printhead rides. Easily broken ... use caution when cleaning with a cotton swab dampened with water or rubbing alcohol. When dirty from overspray, the strip can cause all types of problems. In the Maintenance Mode of HP and Panasonic machines there is a wealth of information. For example, print out the function parameter list to get the lifetime TX/RX/PRINT counts (usually option 3 instead of option 6 in the following example for the HP 200). HP 200 ram clear Press # dial dial dial dial * 6 start Exit the maintenance mode by pressing 9 9 9 start [Note: to print function parameter list substitute 3 for 6 in the line above] [Note: to execute a self-test substitute 0 for 6] [Note: to set parameters 000-999, substitute 1 for 6] [Note: to test modem/tones, substitute 4, 5, or 7 for 6] [The TX/RX/COPY counter is item 061 on function parameter list] HP 300/310 ram clear Press function 7 dial dial dial dial * 6 start HP 700 ram clear Press and hold stop and menu for a few seconds Press 7 0 0 Press up-arrow key 4 times until display reads 09 memory clear Press start Bad line card: replace 2 transistors, 1 diode, and 1 chip. Transistors BS170 (NTE490) @ Q1; 2N3906 @Q3. Diode 1N4148 ar CR2 (next to 2N3906). Chip 74LS14 (74HC14) at U5 (near BS170). HP 900 ram clear (same as Panasonic UF-321/322) Press menu 7 dial dial dial dial * 6 start Press up-arrow key until the display reads shipment set then press start The display will read reset counter Select yes or no then press start HP 900 disassembly tips (proceed with caution and at your own risk). To remove the operation panel cover: face the rear of the unit, place your thumbs in the outside edges of the document feed path, lift up on the thin edge of the cover while pulling the cover toward you. This should release "snaps" located at the outer edges of the document feed path. Facing the front of the machine, lift the cover up and toward you, then disconnect a cable attached to a board on the rear of the operation panel. To access the document feed mechanism, remove a white plastic retainer in the upper right hand corner of the ADF cover, disconnect the ground strap on the right side of the cover, and slide the cover slightly to the right until it is unhinged. The cover housing the scanner glass can be lifted off after removing several screws, popping two "snaps" at the rear corners, and then carefully popping two more snaps at the front corners of the cover. At this point you would be able to clean one scanner mirror and the ADF sensors & rollers. If you need to remove the line card, you'll have to remove the remaining covers, one screw located at the front of the power supply, four screws that hold the printer assembly in place, one screw at the right rear corner of the scanner assembly, pop two snaps at the front corners of the scanner assembly (remove a long white plastic retainer at the left front corner of the scanner assembly). After gently lifting the scanner assembly upward, the printer assembly can be removed to reveal the line card. During reassembly, be sure to check the positioning of the print paper detect sensor (the spring comes off the sensor and you get an out-of-paper error). Another observation we've made is that on some (but not all) HP 900's, there is a metal retaining clip on the left end of the paper pickup roller's shaft. Apparently the plastic lever (retainer or lock) on the left end of the axle doesn't always hold the mechanism in place in the event of a multi-feed that jams the machine, and at some point in production of the machines a metal clip was added to hold the plastil retainer firmly in place. HP 900 set number of rings to answer (default is 2) Press menu 7 dial dial dial dial * 1 start Press 4 5 start clear Enter the number of rings desired then press start stop stop HP Office Jet / LX For a full ram clear, press and hold * and 1 while turning the power on. Hold the keys down for a few seconds after the display reads self test please wait then release the keys For a partial ram clear, press * and 4 while turning the power on. For the Diagnostics Mode hold * and 7 while turning the power on. Afterwards, new menu items will be found on the display including diagnostics. Turn the unit off afterwards to dump the diagnostic menu selection. The original Office Jet/LX will print a scanner calibration chart/instructions. If the modem fails, remove it. Reinstall and test. Clear Paper Jam: Remove RX tray, press load/eject and paper should load part way; press load/eject a second time and the page should be ejected. If the page ejects ok, then it's not necessarily a mechanical problem, in which case you should clean the encoder strip and sensor. If the page does not load properly, it is probably a mechanical failure. Laserjet paper is slick on one side and may not load properly. Recycled cartridges spray excess ink on the encoder strip. |
